| You know how when you assume you make an ass out of u and me? Well, I have made an ass out of myself twice over this weekend. Not u, though (I hope). See, there is this farmer's market on Belmont and Wolcott that I assumed was going to be operating yesterday. I was sure enough about this that I didn't bother consulting my list of farmer's markets before hauling the 3 or so miles out there on my bike (a pretty treacherous stretch for bikers, no less). It wasn't going on, of course, but a banner announced that it does go on every Sunday.
Great, so I went there Sunday, today, aiming to get there before 1. Because I am such an ass, I didn't need to consult the list to be sure that I wouldn't be arriving too late. So I hauled the 3 miles there again, a little easier this time because traffic was lighter. And wouldn't you know! They had closed up at noon, and the last vendor was packed and about to leave.
Right, so that's why I never go to the farmer's markets. Well, I guess its back to the shitty supermarket "near" me today. Sigh.

I gave one of my monthly house tours today. Well, it was half a tour (thankfully) because the M house is still closed. It was a large group, I guess because of the holiday weekend. Other than that, there wasn't anything unusual about it. No Wright or Arts n' Crafts nuts this time. But everyone was attentive and there were some good questions asked. There was, however, a pack of youngsters hanging out across the street, sketching the house. Notre Dame architecture students, apparently. From my home town but not my alma mater. There were a good forty of them all told, stationed at different points along the block.
I've given the tour something like thirty times, and I'm still not very comfortable with it. The powers that be say that I give one of the best tours, and I can certainly rattle off my spiel with the greatest of ease, but I can't seem to get the flow down. I'll finish talking about a room with a lame "well, that's all I have to say about the library; let's move on to...". And then I never know if I should lead the way to the next place, or tell everyone where to go, and then bring up the rear as they shuffle there. So I play it by ear, and do a combination of both. No two of my tours are the same as far as that goes.
P.S. The infection, if that's what it was, has been vanquished by my mighty immune system.
| I think I’ve got a minor sinus infection going. I’ve got this soreness on the left side of my jaw, which can really hurt when I chew something. I would think it was from grinding my teeth or something else, but it’s been going on for several days now. Also, it seems to subside when I take vitamin C. Also, I got an infection in the same area at almost the exact same time last year (see my very first entry here), which suggests that yes, it’s the same thing again, and that my late-summer allergies make me prone to these infections.
So, long story short, between dealing with that and my usual allergy symptoms, I was operating at well below full capacity yesterday, and was downright wiped in the evening. It didn’t stop me from making a huge amount of New Mexican Succotash Chowder (I forgot to halve the recipe like I usually do; I will be freezing a lot for later), but it did keep me from working on the portfolio or doing anything else useful. I hope I can lick this thing, and soon.
| I had a good date last night. Nothing spectacular, but “good” is more than I could say for, oh, five of the past six dates I’ve been on. We both have a big interest in design and architecture (me being an architect, she having studied it and working at something related), which is a good thing to have in common. Abby is Christian- references were made to regular church attendance- but I have yet to determine how Christian. If you catch my meaning. I want to see her again, and the feeling seems to be mutual. Hot damn! | | |
| For someone who rarely watches movies, I’ve sure been writing a lot about them in here. That’s what today’s tidbit is about. Yesterday was the last night of the Grant Park Film Festival (i.e. Tuesday movies in the park), and wouldn’t you know but that it was rained out again. That means I missed out on it altogether this year, so sad. Claudia and I had been planning on going, so we used my apartment as the rain location. We decided to watch Roman Holiday, which you might recall was last week’s rained-out movie-in-the-park. Apparently lots of other people had the same idea, as I had to call six video stores before I found one that had a copy of the movie that wasn’t checked out. So we watched it, and it was even better than I’d expected it to be. One of my blogging pals out there has a crush on in-his-prime Gregory Peck. Well, I have a crush on in-her-prime Audrey Hepburn. Those two sure made a fun couple in this movie. | | |
